Sporting Clays the Saegertown Way
July and August the annual Shoot Sporting Clays the Saegertown way was held. The challenging course led the shooters through our gronds from trees to fields and presented a number of different and vary challenging target presentations. The shoot also included a very tasty lunch prepared by some of the hard working women who are such a vital part of our club,
Construction of the Pistol Pavilion 2020
Starting in late 2019 and being completed in 2020 was a new addition to our club grounds. Jim Conner and Josh Bargar donated several days of work to provide the handgun range with a new pavilion to provide shooters with shelter from the rain and sun. We all benefited from their hard work and we just received some photos from Josh showing the progress of their work. You may note that some of the time they worked past sundown to complete this project. Our thanks go to these two dedicated members.
The Shooters appreciation dinner 2020
Sunday, October 11th had us gather for an afternoon of friends, fun and food. As a way of saying thank you to all those who helped make our club the great club it is, we held our annual Shooters Appreciation Dinner. All shooters who participated in any of our organized shooting activities were invited. The food, prepared by Jim Taylor and his wife Chris and Dan and Linda Spencer, was a great hunk of ham with potatoes, Mac&Cheese, Corn and Beans with a roll to help push it all down. Then the topper was a great cake for dessert.
The VIPL shooters and their victory in the VIPL/John Holt Open got to hang the "Rubber Chicken" on our wall your a third straight year. Ron Foulk gave a bit of recognition to the two guys responsible for building the covered shooting station on the handgun range Jim Conner and Josh Barger. We also hand the opportunity to thank Ron and Nancy Peters for all the hard work they are putting in keeping our trapshooting activities so well organized. Jim Taylor, in addition to being a ham cooker par excellon kept the records for the winners in the Wobbles League and the hard work of Dan Spencer and Bob Huson keeping our facilities ans club grounds in such great shape was much appreciated by our members. After the dinner, a free round of trap was also part of the fun.

2020 New Gun Owners Safety Class
On October 10th, 2020, in another outreach to the public, and especially the first time gun purchasers or those who are serious about purchasing a first time gun, we held our first Gun Safety Class. With the large number of first time gun owners who wanted to start of with a proper foundation of basic gun safety, familiarization and proper use, Dave Powers and Brendon Peters and others from Dave's crew supplied us with top notch safety, identification and proper use of firearms. Our club members manned the three shooting stations to help the students become familiar with firearms when they got to fire live ammunition. This included handguns, rifles and shotguns.
After a couple of hours of classroom instruction and lunch break, the students separated into three groups who rotated around the three shooting stations to actually shoot all three types of firearms. They had the opportunity to try shotgunning on our trap fields, use the various handguns including 22 Rimfire, and 9 Millimeter on our pistol range that they learned about in class and shoot three different rifles including .22 Rimfire bolt action, .223 bolt action and an AR-15 also in .223 caliber. The looks on the student faces when they hit their targets with the very first shot some of them have ever fired from a firearm were truly a joy to see. Here are a few pictures giving you a small idea of what all we did. At the end of the class, all students received the Certificate of Completion. After class those students who had brought their own firearms then had an opportunity to receive personalized instruction on the proper and safe use of their personal firearm.

Isaac Gray Benefit Shoot
The benefit shoot for Isaac Gray, a six year old battling diabetes was held at our club on October 19th, 2019. Between the shooting sports, the raffles, the dinner sales and the Chinese Auction with its 49 donated prizes, $5774 was raised to help Isaac with his medical expenses. The weather was just great and the food and goodies were a big hit with all who attended. Many first time trap shooters came out to help and found out a lot more about hitting those elusive flying clay discs. Many thanks to those hard workers who donated their time, effort and materials to make this event the success it was. It was a powerful example of the willingness of the shooting public and sportsmen and women to help someone in need. When people work together, regardless if they are shooters or not, like this, it combines their individual efforts into one very potent and high powered force to battle for the good of their fellow man.
High School League
The seven teams in the local High School Trap League visited our club for their weekly shoot in the Fall of 2019. The turnout was excellent as was the quality and sportsmanship shown by these young men and women. Here are a few pictures from this shoot.
Youth Conservation Camp 2019
Thanks to Bob Schoenfeldt. we have some photos from the Youth Conservation Camp headquartered at our club in July 2019. This week long camp featured classroom study, field work, group projects and individual efforts in very many of the outdoor conservation and recreation fields. Some of the topics covered include Aquatic biology, Habitat conservation and protection, archery, wildlife and fisheries conservation and development, Early American outdoor history, safe and proper use of firearms, proper fur taking methods, team building and a number of other fun filled activities and projects. Although headquartered at our club, the camp traveled to the Linesville fish hatchery, Erie Wildlife Refuge, Woodcock Outdoors Education and an number of other locations as a part of the camp.
The camp was funded by the Crawford County Federation of Sportsmen Clubs and a generous grant from the Friends of the NRA, the NRA Foundation. It would not have been possible because of the help and dedication of the many volunteers who helped in the organization and presentations that were a part of the many activities.

Historical Photos from the 1970's
Some recently discovered photos from the 1970's show the initial grounds clearing work which was needed to allow the installation of our first two trap fields and adjacent area. Ron Peters discovered these photos while digging through some of the old records of our club. The exact date of the project is no longer remembered but best guess estimates put it into the 1970's era. If you can provide any further details about this project please use the "Contact" button on the home page so we can fill in the details.
Grounds Clean Up May 4, 2019
May 4th found about a dozen of our members, young and "not so young" working to improve our grounds and cleaning up the damages of a very hard, wet windy winter and spring season. Don't worry, if you still want to help I am sure we can find more things to be done. The threat of, and eventual light, rain did put a halt on some of the projects that still need to be done.
The 2018 Youth Conservation Camp 2018
After a hiatus of over twelve (12) years, our Youth Conservation Camp was officially resurrected this year. It was made possible through the NRA Foundation grant we received. Although the number of campers was small, all of the children learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the camp. The campers built fifteen (15) wood duck nesting boxes, banded mourning doves and ducks, had a session on raptors, fired 22 rifles, shot trap and also archery, learned how to use a compass and participated with a professional retriever and pointer demonstration. Environmental Stewardship was stressed during the camp. You will notice the NRA eye protection and hearing protection on the children!
I am eternally grateful for the assistance from the NRA Foundation and the leadership in Western PA that made this possible.

Sporting Clays, The saegertown way
The end of July marked the start of one of our annual events. For the last Saturday in July and the first Saturday in August the trap fields shared in the shotgunning activities with a sporting clays course set up on the club grounds. It was a great success with 110 shooters participating over the two weeks. Thanks to Hanna Price, we have a number of pictures from the Annual Sporting Clays Days. Here you can see some of the shooters walking and riding through the course and shooting at those elusive flying, or sometimes bouncing, orange discs. Look closely at the pictures and you to may even get to see these "birds" and "rabbits" as they try to avoid the pellets heading their way. You can also see at least a few of the hard working volunteers manning the traps, keeping score and handling the transportation through this course of open fields, brush heavy trees and open trees.
Here we have Nancy Peters, one of our club's hardest workers, trying out the new fields. Don't know if she broke the bird or not but everyone that has tried the new fields likes them. Come on out and see for yourself.
Here are some pics from the Wednesday night (Sept 7, 2016) rock picking and seeding of the new trap fields. Thanks to the Spencers, Conrad and Ellie Shearer, Jim Taylor, Tom Kozubal, Chris Layton and Bob Huson for coming out and working on the hot and dusty fields. Katy Spencer got all the yardage numbers stenciled on both fields as well. A very productive evening!

Here are some pictures of wiring work in progress on the trap fields. Notice that there are no more dirt piles. And it was discovered the hard way by Sean, that there were some yellow jackets in the pile he moved. And Dan also discovered that there were also bees in the other pile. But he avoided being stung. Complete electrical service will be hooked up to both houses by early next week.
